The Daiquiri was created in 1896 by an American engineer named Jennings Cox, who worked in Cuba.

One evening, while entertaining guests he found himself in quite the predicament by running out of gin. Being in Cuba, the only booze available was locally made rum. Cox created a punch with the rum along with citrus and sugar, poured it over ice and topped it with mineral water. His guests absolutely loved it and asked what the cocktail was called. Being quick on his feet, he named the cocktail “The Daiquiri” after the small beachside village where he was working.
